AND WE SANG TO THE MOON

and we drove all night but didn’t get too far
smoking this and that in your shitty car
made deliveries while your friends and me
sat idly in the torn back seat
cigarette burns and fast food trash
nickels dimes and stacks of cash

when you pluck the strings, do you remember when
they thought we were brothers, we were friends
and we climbed the roof with the alcohol
the tape recorder and acoustic guitar
and you tripped and fell inside your head
left some baggies beside my bed

and we’d walk to nowhere and drove the same
dirtied up our town, dirtied up our names
when we pluck the strings, when you pop the pill
do you remember living? are you living still?

and we sang to the moon and collapsed in laughs
saw the paperman as he walked past
before the sun rose above our town
a summer sky turning black to brown

BODY HEAT & FINGERTIPS

drop the needle on the old LP
kill the lights and come close to me
meet me where the meet me where the meet me where the moonlight glows
dance with me while the band plays something slow

that must be when I fell
you didn’t know the words, mumbled them well
meet me back at me meet back at meet me back at cloud nine
your clothes are on the floor, all mixed up with mine

blue to blue, lip to lip. body heat and fingertips

morning sky casts you in yellow
out on the sidewalk, you’re wearing my clothes
I Polaroid you Polaroid you Polaroid you in my head
then it’s back inside, then it’s back to bed

blue to blue, lip to lip. body heat and fingertips

silhouetted, we’re on the wall
watching the candle rise and fall

with a stranger I woke, astonished to find
I’d need to get over you at least one more time
I looked around I looked around I looked around and found it true
everybody else is someone who isn’t you

drop the needle on the old LP
kill the lights and come close to me
meet me where the meet me where the meet me where the moonlight glows
dance with me while the band plays something slow

blue to blue, lip to lip. body heat and fingertips

CLEANSED IN WAVES

how much did it rain
when I was away?
my toys washed out to sea
it only takes one wave

did it rain inside?
did they lock up your mind?
I will do my best
to free you for a while

under the kissing tree
outside Manny B’s
marsh marigold ‘round our feet
as we take a hit of woodfire breeze

I walk to your door
hear the queen on the stereo
candles flicker shadows
and you’re wearing my clothes

you got yourself new moves
that move me just right
you got yourself a look
that can take me out of time

back where mushrooms grew
the old piano stood
you imagined you could find
the music trapped inside

butterflies circle the keys
while we played their theme
I heard somebody scream
but I just tuned it out

let it guide your way
across the ivories
we come here with our spirit
and leave with melodies

by the strawberry bush
in a forest dark
all the hearts-a-burst
near a grandfather’s clock

about then, it strikes nine
you pull my jacket tight
the man in the moon locks eyes
with you

how much did it rain
when I was away?
this must be our day
to be cleansed in waves

COUNT THE COLORS

“you made it to autumn,” I whispered in your ear
soon I had to catch an evening train and you had to stay right here
I talked to you although you could not talk to me
I remember the burning in my stomach when I got up to leave
so when I left that night, I left behind my guitar
it was in the corner that next morning when you were written into the stars

when the roadside leaves tumble down
and gracefully touch the ground
I’ll count the colors for me
I’ll count the colors for you

you made it to autumn, but that was another year
this one finds you absent from the places you held dear
November finds me wrapped up in autumn clothes
flannel shirts and the scarves your mama bought me
and the same old wool peacoat
one day I’ll make it back to your daddy’s house
and I’ll lay beneath your favorite tree
and breathe you in and out

when the roadside leaves tumble down
and gracefully touch the ground
I’ll count the colors for me
I’ll count the colors for you

when the sinking sun cuts through the trees
in places you once walked with me
burning wood and honey breeze
close my eyes, you’re here with me
when the roadside leaves tumble down
and cover the streets of your old town
I’ll count the colors for me, I’ll count the colors for you
I’ll count the colors for me, I’ll count the colors for two

CRICKETS SURROUND

I miss the night in your hometown
friends gather near, crickets surround
I miss the night in your hometown

big yellow moon, parking lot bare
crumbling sidewalk, I saw you there
whistling your way through October air
long-sleeved and cold, I saw you there

I miss the night in your hometown
friends gather near, crickets surround
I miss the night in your hometown

had I been yours and had you been mine
the weather would have been just fine

morning arrives on the Kings Highway
the diesel black night turns to yellow and grey
eighteen wheels pass by the guardrails and I
on patchwork roads and the Route 13 sky

I miss the night in your hometown
friends gather near, crickets surround
I miss the night in your hometown

had I been yours and had you been mine
the weather would have been just fine

DEAD PAINTERS PAINTING THE SKY

I always watch the clouds collide
dead painters painting the sky
I always watch the clouds collide
dead painters painting the sky

everyone stayed home, they can’t stand the chill
town to ourselves and time to kill
everything is bare but the holly trees
ever close your eyes, lay back, and leave?

the more ya give, more you receive
out-of-body, out of mind, into a dream

I always watch the clouds collide
dead painters painting the sky
I always watch the clouds collide
dead painters painting the sky

the fog lamps only change the hue
of the endless cloud we’re driving through
gravestone girls with old guitars
serenading country stars

brown film that’s deteriorating
sure as the sepia skies are fading

I always watch the clouds collide
dead painters painting the sky
I always watch the clouds collide
dead painters painting the sky

I won’t ever split, but right now I’m gone
I pass by and wave with my radio on
furious joy, the towpath green
the glorious noise is toying with me

I always watch the clouds collide
dead painters painting purple and olive in the sky…

FUTURE TENSE

the sky fluorescent gray, a dusty neon light
my head, a runaway train, I try to hold on tight
green scenes play out around me, punctuated in yellow
popping up in corners where people don’t seem to go
I’m watching the parade go by, ghosts walking in a line
each and every one could devastate me with a smile
while renegade slivers of sunlight cut through the window just right
and catch your eye as ya catch a glimpse of a yellow t-shirt so tight
oh my

I got trapped in the summer and you got future tense
I only said that I loved you, I never said it made sense

don’t know for the life of me how you walked into all my songs
promise that you’ll waltz away if you’re not gonna sing along
you willed yourself invisible, a ragtime talking ghost
hauntingly you taunted me from locations remote

I got trapped in the summer and you got future tense
I only said that I loved you, I never said it made sense

ya can’t wander forever
ya can’t wander forever
ya can’t wander forever
ya can’t wander forever

I got trapped in the summer and you got future tense
I only said that I loved you, I never said it made sense

my head is a runway train and I try to hold on tight
I was a thunderstorm raining in my glass of wine
green scenes play out around me
got no time to be black and white
if you love the way that I stumble, why ya asking me to walk right?
if you love the way that I wander, don’t ask me to walk a straight line
and if you’re the one with eyes for me, why ya using your mama’s sight?

I got trapped in the autumn and you got future tense
I only said that I loved you, I never said it made sense

I got trapped in the winter and you got future tense
I only said that I loved you, I never said it made sense

GATHER GHOSTS

wake me up and fill my cup, I wanna see the river flow
time has gone so now I’m on vacation everywhere I go
I got some fucks to give but not as many as I did
I let most of them go a couple miles down the road

flip my switch, I’ll kiss your lips in shadows under Mechanic Street
against the wall, your dress and all the red dirt under your bare feet
my love has come to stay and you know love saves the day
so patiently she waits silently by the gate

wastin’ time on my way to nowhere
I’m going where the towpath leads me

sing a song that’s strong enough to gather all the local ghosts
we sing it loud and now the crowd has offered all of them a toast
they’re dancing on their seats while I pound piano keys
soon I’ll be runnin’ free on them oil-painted streets

wastin’ time on my way to nowhere
I’m going where the towpath leads me

we’re standing on the roof where a garden has grown
we want to gather ghosts where the vines climb the stone

wastin’ time on my way to nowhere
I’m going where the towpath leads me

GETTIN’ CLOSER

through the dark hills, the country roads
the trees that don’t appear ‘til the headlights expose
we drove to nowhere all night
wander forever I will and I do
small purple flowers and buttercups bloom

every day, it takes so long to get home
she smiles like she doesn’t want you to know

and when you dream, you trip through springs
searching the tavern for lost, treasured things
lost, treasured things
wander forever, you may and you must
you’ve gone underground with the cobwebs and dust

every day, it takes so long to get home
she smiles like she doesn’t want you to know

HAPPY TO MEET YOU

I know that you don’t know me
but I’m looking for a friend
you’re finding your beginning
as someone else finds their end

everyone wants to meet you
they all want to say hello
we want to get to know you
and welcome you to our show

while we were waiting, singing our song
maybe somebody pushed you along

out of the blue one evening
someone knocked on the door
now we don’t have to worry
we don’t have to wait no more

while we were waiting, singing our song
maybe somebody helped you along

what I am trying to say now
is I wrote you a tune
what I am trying to tell you
is I’m happy to meet you
I’m happy to meet you
and I already love you

HEADS IN THE CLOUDS

down the parkway, shorelines, the barren pines that I traversed
I found what I sought and had no thought to rehearse
one day I’ll find a way to navigate through the mist
leaves and clovers and the ground-creeping ivy that we would kiss
while we float weightlessly, you and me, heads in the clouds

all them see-through boys, spending all their time with toys
all them see-through boys, spending all their time with toys

serendipity, come find me where I stand
in my new thrift store shoes, seven notes fall to my hands

give me all your toys, look the door and make some noise
give me all your toys, look the door and make some noise

no one knows us here and so we trap ourselves inside
strangers yet unseen, a netherworld where we can hide
no one knows us here and so we trap ourselves inside
strangers yet unseen, a netherworld where we can hide

float weightlessly, you and me, heads in the clouds
float weightlessly, you and me, heads in the clouds…

HIGH FALLS, DECEMBER

High Falls, December, there’s ice on the road
I see the train bridge in black and white
and back home a hundred little lights
reveal colors shining from the chandelier

Hyde Park, December, there’s a crowd in the yard
everything’s covered with snow
up the mountain and the river down below
and the sun never broke through that day

a single light casts patterns
that weave around the walls
of a painter’s home
that we have made our own

I’d hoped and I’d prayed when all the pain subsides
I’d find someone who’d take a ride with me
pack up everything and flee
alone together we shall be

in High Falls this December

it’s almost time
almost time
almost time

HONEY MOON

I think she’s coming to me
I think she’s coming to you
I’m lookin’ up at the stars
I’m watchin’ the honey moon

you’re flying over our heads
it’s finally time to go home
but now you’re down at my feet
just when I thought you had gone

I think she’s coming to me
I think she’s coming to you
I’m lookin’ up at the stars
I’m watchin’ the honey moon

what will you come back to be?
to let us know you’re OK?
I saw a bunny painting
at Trenton Coffee today

I think she’s coming to me
I think she’s coming to you
I’m lookin’ up at the stars
I’m watchin’ the honey moon

we’re outside rockin’ the chairs
we’re outside pickin’ guitars
Nonna is smiling at me
everyone’s watching the stars

we’re outside rockin’ the chairs
we’re outside pickin’ guitars
the honey moon has arrived
you’re somewhere among the stars

I think she’s coming to me
I think she’s coming to you
I’m lookin’ up at the stars
I’m watchin’ the honey moon

HOW DID YOU DO THAT?

those friendly girls outside on the street
mustaches drawn, they smile at me
the towpath glows, sparkles and moss
diamonds inside, soon I am lost
feel myself lift. felt myself fly

I said to the air
I said to the air
how did you do that, Mr. Joe?

out on the corner, love saves the day
me with my love, you with the same
I find the place where the artists lay
cuttin’ up words from the newspaper page
crosswalk flash, we go on our way

we go on our way
we go on our way
how did you do that, Mr. Joe?

if you come to hear me sing, I’ll try not to break any strings
if you come to hear me sing, I’ll try not to break anything
we’ll keep you all around us, when you go
keep you all around us, when you go

how did you do that, Mr. Joe?

HUNDRED DOLLAR BILL & FRIENDS

me and you and the third horse
and the mystery man in the wings
too nervous to join us onstage

he laid down in the coffin
then he rose like a dimestore savior
though his threads were mangled
to great applause he escaped

Miss Helen made a dime
killing the lights of Brooklyn
she brought me some candies
in a tin

floating on the water
there were hundred dollar bills
mixed in with sawdust
in barrels they hid

if you iron my money
I’ll take you for a feast
down from Rhode Island
to the big city

is this money real?
the bills are so clean
so clean you can’t spend them
not this week

the city awaits you, Hundred Dollar Bill
the city awaits you, Hundred Dollar Bill
the city awaits you, Hundred Dollar Bill

I AIN’T DYIN’

I clearly remember thinking
“how will I know what this is ’til it’s gone?”
I thought that when everything was good
when everything seemed strong

I clearly remember sinking
into every side she was showing
every layer she revealed
and then I just kept going

six feet of dirt above my head
“but I ain’t dyin’”
that’s what she said

I clearly remember at yellow lights
she’d always say a prayer to him
she’d close her eyes
and let him in

only time itself is untying me
“I ain’t dyin’,” I heard her say
defiantly

I clearly remember thinking
“whatever this is, I won’t understand
until we’re walking different streets
and I’m not holding her hand”
I clearly remember
turning around and she appeared
you don’t really have to look
one day, they’re just here
but for now, let’s listen to a Chuck Berry tune
did you ever hear him sing “Havana Moon”?

I DON’T MIND THE RAIN

we will be there weather denying
Coke cans blowing. newspaper flying
flashes of light that don’t make a sound
rain gunshots the car roof and begins to slow down

somebody’s waiting beneath the tracks
maybe she’s waiting for you to come back

I don’t mind the rain

we drove on this highway way back when
now wildflowers grow there again

I INVITE YOU

I’ll board that train after all
I’ll pick it up in Newport News
I’ll settle in by Richmond
and all my dreams will be Potomac blue

leave me be though I might miss
all the dancing in the streets
Crescent train’s going south
but this one takes you home with me

see your man where waves crash
he’s asleep when you arrive
slowly he starts to type
letter-by-letter: I am alive

that guy lives in my head
then again, he always has
I see him at my side
watching all the scenery pass

hoping I will always
always ask if he will come along
and I do, yes, I do
I will always invite you

I WAS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

oh I wish I could help you
find your footing, find the door
oh I wish, oh believe me
we would leave here like before
oh I wish you were beachside
with your feet high, feelin’ fine
oh I wish you weren’t screamin’
like a demon all the time

I was in the neighborhood
and thought I’d drop by

yeah I heard you call it prison
and no one visits, no one shows
yeah I heard that you were finished
you’re beginning to let go
now I feel like I been doin’
all your groovin’ for you
I been singing, I been flying
I been high and on the move

there’s junkies in the attic
biding their time
I was in the neighborhood
and thought that I’d drop by

oh I’m glad that you remember
who she is and who I am
but I wish I could get you
back to shore and back to land
while we’re watching lovely traffic
as it passes past the waves
while the ocean’s changing sunset
changes slowly through the haze

I was in the neighborhood
and thought I’d say hi
a girl you met the other day
wants to drop by

I’M GLAD THEY MADE TWO

something like a twin, I end where you begin
part of you is me. with you, I am free
and I’m glad
I’m so glad
I’m so glad
they made two

when one of us is down the other’s always up
honest to each other like strangers on a bus
in a foreign city on a groggy Tuesday morning

and I’m glad
I’m so glad
I’m so glad
they made two

in balance like twins
if it’s up to strength within
we are as golden as the sun
rising over the point
where the river meets the creek
on some silver-plated morning

part of you is me
with you I am free

and I’m glad
I’m so glad
I’m so glad
they made two

hello my new friend
I’ll help you climb the fridge

something like a twin
I end where you begin
part of you is me
with you, I am free

and I’m glad
I’m so glad
I’m so glad
they made two

dear stranger on a bus
the universe takes care of us

IF IT HELPS YOU DREAM…

if it helps you sleep and I’m not around
think ocean sounds
if it helps you dream, swim around your memory
drown in the ecstasy
if it helps you sleep and the clock says 4 AM
think about the riverbed
if it helps you dream, when you’re all alone
open up the envelope

if it helps you sleep, play the movie you wrote with me
your favorite scenes
if it helps you dream and the clock says 5 AM
slip on my clothes again
if it helps you sleep, try to find that note
something you can hold
if it helps you dream, we’ll sing on the ride back home
‘til your eyes are closed

IN HER POWDER ROOM

maybe you been wonderin’ ‘bout my baby
in your eyes it’s clear to see
clearly you been wonderin’ ‘bout my baby
and why she’d waste her wanderin’ with me

maybe you been wonderin’ ‘bout my baby
and if she can keep up with my speed
my baby lets me go where I am going
knowing that she’s going with me

lately I been thinkin’ ‘bout my baby
my international gal of mystery
I’m sitting by the waves as they’re crashing
splashing on my ostrich and me

I been watchin’ the sky for my baby
on the shore with my souvenirs
my suitcase sittin’ lonely on the shoreline
waiting for hers to appear

black squirrels runnin’ through the meadow
I’m talking to them all afternoon
wonderin’ if they’re wise to when she’s coming
asking if she’s coming soon

I’ve been waiting in New Jersey for my baby
singin’ me a lonesome tune
somewhere ‘cross the ocean she is laying
while I’m playing in her powder room
while I’m singing in her powder room
doin’ weird stuff in her powder room

JOANNA, IT’S INSANE

mind like a cave that you’re wandering around
twenty years ’til the power switch is found
twenty years trying to get the flashlight lit
hitting the side and shaking it
twenty years ’til the power switch is found
mind like a cave you’re wandering around

Joanna, it’s insane
the hoops through which we jump
to remain exactly the same
Joanna
insane

twenty odd years to kick and scream
mind like a forest you’re wandering
twenty years kicking away debris
clearing a path so you can see
twenty odd years to kick and scream
mind like a forest you’re wandering

Joanna, it’s insane
the hoops through which we jump
to remain exactly the same
Joanna
insane

dispatch me from where you’re arrived
tell me what you’ve seen since half a life ago
beauty and crazy pain
Joanna, it’s insane
acid heads, acid rain
Joanna, it’s insane

KISSIN’ IN THE DARK

this place was citronella Valhalla
this place: ticky-tacky Shangri La
this place: an illfest funhouse
this place: full of carnival sounds
this house once was sinking
once burned to the ground

we’re inside looking for a spark
we’re outside kissing in the dark

that night she had me stumbling and crazy
that night the neighbors couldn’t see
she had me tickin’ like a timebomb
she had me speakin’ in tongues
in time, you and I exploded the night

we’re inside looking for a spark
we’re outside kissing in the dark

how high can we stack the dishes?
how high ‘til they threaten to fall down?
how high were those people on the front porch?
how high were the pine trees in the yard?
how high had you and I ascended?
how far did we have to fall down?

we’re inside looking for a spark
we’re outside kissing in the dark

hey you, join me on the piano
hey you, on the thrift store chair
hey you, come and turn-on your slow jams
hey you, come and tease me while you dance
and I’ll lay back and watch the show
maybe I’ll make a cameo

we’re inside looking for a spark
we’re outside kissing in the dark

KNIT HAT GIRL

Cleo said you wished that I could see
everything you saw when you looked at me
rays of love you shine, the forever kind
you were always scared, always scared to find

I want to hide away until the sun is here
or a knit hat girl suddenly appears
I want to hide away until the sun is here
or a knit hat girl suddenly reappears

by the old hotel, I saw you once before
down the long, dark hallway, elephant bag on the floor
strangers hustle by but all that I can see
are pictures in my mind’s eye of brown eyes fixed on me

I want to hide away until the sun is here
or a knit hat girl suddenly appears
I want to hide away until the sun is here
or a knit hat girl suddenly reappears

be with me when I sing

I’ve walked by your side and I’ve walked without you
hand-in-hand we travel, heart-to-heart we do
I’ve sung by your side and I’ve sung without you
you can have my melody if I can have you

LADY BLUE

spin me all your jazz, Lady Blue
float it all around your living room
where cardamon and sage and ginger grew
spin me all your jazz, Lady Blue

no one ventures here but me and you
rolling wheat in fields, morning dew
rolling skies in strange mirror views
no one ventures here but me and you

now we’re all alone, Lady Blue
chills all up your back, Lady Blue
time and space are gone, Lady Blue
these eyes are fixed upon Lady Blue

spin me all your jazz, Lady Blue
float it all around your living room
where peppermint and sage, fennel grew
spin me all your jazz, Lady Blue

LAYERS OF WINTER CLOTHES

rain comes down in New Hope upon the Delaware
hopin’ no one sees me as I’m sleepin’ there
maybe she will find me in my winter clothes
maybe she will find me where the cool wind blows

remember when you saw me singing under the trees?
sittin’ on a big rock, she was standing close to me
I sang about the red coat and you seemed so sure
that the ghost-like figure that you saw was her

the scene filled with water rising in the city square
“the elements always win” I whispered to the air
we were singin’ with each other when we found a staircase
and ascended safely out to a blue-skied sunny place

I saw her in a tavern where we’d never gone before
she said it would soon be time for wearing layers of winter clothes
bumming around this old town, I thought about our times
in time, she got a fever and I stared into her eyes

I sang about the lineman as we began to grieve
we grieved for what was coming and we didn’t hide our tears
I woke and I was crying like I never had before
still, I felt so grateful that she visited once more

sunrise in Nashville from my dad’s hotel room
and since he still was sleeping, I wrote down this tune
I’ll sing it to her spirit, her love, and her beauty
I’ll sing in case she’s listening somewhere close to me

LAZE AWAY

I have seen you walk alone
down the hallways on your own
and though you seem to hide
I want to see inside

maybe if you’re free today
find me sitting in the shade
underneath the trees
laze away with me

water through the fountains flows
statues where the gardens grow
carvings in the stone
from centuries ago

maybe if you’re free today
find me sitting in the shade
dress yourself in green
laze away with me

maybe if you’re free today
find me sitting in the shade
underneath the trees
laze away with me

maybe, if you’re free tonight
find me sitting in the light
underneath the moon
I’ll laze away with you

I have seen you walk alone

MOVE INTO ME

move into me, move outta yourself
swipe those pictures off the shelf
cut me in until you cut me out
but you’ll see me stick around

hanging around the doctor
strolling round the fields
breaking with the lawyers
fixing to steal your love

move into me, move outta yourself
swipe those pictures off the shelf
cut me in until you cut me out
but you’ll see me stick around

picking with the babies
grinning with the sharks
wandering the meadow
been spotted after dark
someone’s screaming like a banchee
somebody’s screaming like a fox

you don’t know where i’m gonna sign your name

move into me, move outta yourself
swipe those pictures off the shelf
cut me in until you cut me out
but you’ll see me stick around

walking with the ladies
newspaper on their heads
waking in the eighties
ink dripping on the shed
I been sleeping in the love nest
out among the trees
I fall asleep in honey
dreaming you so sweet
I’m dreaming you so sweet
I’m dreaming you so sweet
I’m dreaming you so sweet

move into me, move outta yourself

MRS. TYLER

ladybugs are crawling on me
burning leaves are falling at her feet
in the Indian Summer heat
sights that fill her head & bedroom
shadows climbing down the rocks & stones
scents that fill the hall and kitchen
apple pie delivered by a ghost

water flowing down the Neshaminy
when I open her window and breathe
she told me this is how it felt a hundred years ago

dyin’ leaves are falling on me
burning sun is calling out to me
lying on her back beside me
we can see a million kinds of green

this is how it felt a hundred years ago
let me come by one more time before the summer goes

MY GRASS IS GREENER

some just saw the window, some could see right through
some were gonna do something great, some kinda forgot to
some had beautiful visions playing in their heads
some got distracted by beautiful visions laying in their beds
some of them saw me on the side of the road, some thought I got lost in smoke
some think my grass is greener, some want to take a toke

some of them could hear the music, some heard the commercial break
some of them put fingers in their ears and can’t hear a word I say
some of them got love, some of them got leery
some of them skipped class and spent an awful lotta time reading conspiracy theories
some of them chased their dreams, some put them on layaway
some of them went online to track their gifts and found they were eight states away
some of them felt the quicksand, some of them ran away
some of them had the lights burn out and just kinda left it that way

some were frozen like mannequins in a scene from an old saloon
one of ’em’s flying to India pretty soon
some of ’em hid in closets, some got trapped in foyers
some of us just stayed on the roof and serenaded the auburn day
some of them sound quite similar, some found new accents
some are present tense right now, some are noted for their absence
some of them got real pale, some of them got fake tan
some of them got so burnt they never played outside again
some of them are writing their novels, some are writing cautionary tales
some are saving up for first editions, some are just browsing the sales
some of them play the victim, some of their villains have gone
some are stuck in other chapters, some are stuck in other songs

some of them enjoy the flavor, some just started to chug
some took a minute to savor, some passed out on my rug
some got trapped in amber, some of them still grow
some of them think the good old days were a year-and-a-half ago
some of them settled down, some of them got fed up
some of them got to end of this song at the bottom of their coffee cup

NEW HOPE IS CALLING

here’s the plan, we’ll fall in love for a couple days
and go back into the autumn unscathed
by the bridge you’ll be waiting
when snowflakes are falling
and New Hope is calling

the sun is the color of the leaves in the parking lot
are the color of the trees is the color of the haze
is the color of your hair
and I guess I want it covered over me

the leaves on the side of the street
are the color of the lines painted on the road
is the color of your guitar
and I guess I want it washing over me

here’s the plan, we’ll love in fall for a couple days
and go back into the autumn unscathed
but by the bridge, I’ll be waiting
when snowflakes are falling
and New Hope is calling

NO GRAYS AND BLUES

dimly lit, passing through the light
guided by a hand so calm tonight
speak to me so soft and true
wordless whispers, no grays and blues

your light, your life, your energy
seeing you where you’re meant to be
it pulls me in like it pulls in you
couldn’t drag you away if I wanted to

no grays and blues
no grays and blues
wouldn’t ever drag you

I’m broken down but I’m happy here
I feel lucky to have you near
you know you know I could hear you sing
and I wouldn’t trade you for anything

no grays and blues
no grays and blues
wouldn’t ever trade you

it can kill you or awaken your soul
to a life you would never know

no matter where this life brings you
always know that my love is true
if someone new ever comes along
sometime after I am gone
don’t be afraid
give your heart a chance

to love and be loved
to love and be loved
to love and be loved
to love and be loved

so speak to me so soft and true
couldn’t change you if I wanted to
speak to me so soft and true
wordless whispers, no grays and blues…

PURA VIDA

pura vida
pura vida
pura vida
pura vida

no, no, no! sing an ocean song!
‘cause we’re by the waves
a coconut falls to your feet
and the palm trees sway

pura vida
pura vida
pura vida
pura vida

you don’t need too many words
you just need a tune
that reminds you

pura vida
pura vida
pura vida
pura vida

I bet you thought you were done
being on the move
you always brought me along
now I bring you

pura vida
pura vida
pura vida
pura vida

a glass of wine and a silver guitar, it’s you and me
everything’s alright tonight on the Caribbean Sea

pura vida
pura vida
pura vida
pura vida

we can’t change the ending
but are we really through?
a new morning is coming
and there’s a seat for you

pura vida
pura vida
pura vida
pura vida

you don’t need too many words
you just need a tune

PUT THE NEEDLE DOWN

new prayers made of sound!
screaming to the clouds!
get lost to get found!
screaming to the clouds!

get lost to get found!
new prayers made of sound
put the needle down
the record’s spinning around!

ROBYN, WHY AM I NOT SURPRISED?

Robyn, why am I not surprised
you stared too long at the glimmer in her eyes
and turned to glass hypnotized

ya made a girl into God to cover your tracks
emotional potholes and sidewalk cracks
girl into God to cover your tracks

yellow flourishes, psyched-out swirls
the crooked landscape of a young man’s world
yellow flourishes, psyched-out swirls

Robyn, why am I not surprised
you stared too long at the glimmer in her eyes
and turned to glass hypnotized

she filled in the blanks, repaved the space
between the hole in your heart
and the smile on your face
filled in the blanks and repaved the space

Robyn, why am I not surprised
you stared too long at the glimmer in her eyes
and turned to glass hypnotized

SKETCHY GEOFF

Sketchy Geoff drives past me. he ends up on Cherry Street
looks at murals out the window and wonders how much more there is to see in West Reading

Sketchy Geoff turns to me, “let’s spend our days trying to see
just how long, how long we can live like thieves,” Sketchy Geoff and me

Boddah lingers in the dark with a Christmas tinsel scarf
flash bulbs make it spark. “look Boddah, he did it again!”

Mr. Damon Scattergood will write your dreams on slabs of wood
and drop them in the fireplace at his friend Nigel’s estate, yellin’ “get down, souls!”

Inky Voorhees approaches me, lays them glitter-covered leaves
in my hand then off she goes in her sun hat and flowing clothes

don’t hold your breath for Sketchy Geoff

Restless Meg and Jellyfish try to watch for what they wish
house of mirrors and microphones, a hornet flies in Ohio

she knows every little scheme that I’ve got up up my sleeve
landfill lies, Akron dreams, show me yours, I’ll show you these for free

I walk her back from the cliff morning after the junkyard shift
she gives me mangoes and paperbacks, I get so silly baby Auggie claps

when we hitched to the coast, I was Clyde, she was Yoko
driver called himself Potatoes, most people drive too slow, not this guy, though

people walk the way we do when they’ve got something bursting through
something dying to be free, you’ll be Yoko and I’ll be me

don’t hold your breath for Sketchy Geoff

Hinkles, Fingles, Mr. Prior join Mr. Fischer by the fire
eating pork roll, egg, and cheese by the preparatory school

Disable The Friendly Dog with his equally friendly mom
are rollin’ ‘round Frenchman Street, “this is your second chance to buy weed”

Washboard Chaz scrapes it right, cleaning everyone in sight
three Abitas and one to go, Andygator is 8.0 (ABV)

Megan Six don’t sleep well, she knows my secrets, but she won’t tell
I’m looking for her in Earth Fare, let me know if you see her there (aisle twelve)

Sketchy Geoff is moving three boxes full of CBD
on the student’s move-in day and raising eyebrows along the way

don’t hold your breath for Sketchy Geoff

Aggie lived right next door, but she does not anymore
I play her drums, but not too good, whoops, there goes the neighborhood

Sketchy Geoff ‘longside me is stuck in 1993
mixin’ tapes, raising ghosts, but we’ll be back before you know, among the living

Sketchy Geoff writes his songs and makes them go much too long
no bridge to cross, chorus to sing let’s demand of him these things

don’t hold your breath for Sketchy Geoff

SOMETHING SO BEAUTIFUL

“who are you, what do you want from me?”
I spoke between the lines
curly locks and your lipstick fresh
it was our beginning time
I was the burned-down schoolhouse
you were the sunlight
that made the glass shards glisten like diamonds
if you looked at them right

how could you make something beautiful
in a place like this?
how could you make something so beautiful?

harmonizing in Nashua
highway high, freeway free
Topsail Island to Carrboro
and points in between
Centralia was a ways away
where the fire burned underground
you and me made ourselves at home
in other people’s towns
we didn’t wait ‘til the sun came out
we’d just turn the key and drive
you never knew where the time would go
so it was time to be alive

how could you make something beautiful
in a place like this?
how could you make something so beautiful?

you slammed the brakes and you were shaking
under a silent late-night sky
I remember how I held you
‘til you were calm enough to drive

you smiled and said if it was up to you
you’d go to Chapel Hill with me
we’d probably hit the coffee shop
and grab a stack of old LPs

we’d take a trip to somewhere beautiful
on a day like this
we’d take a trip to somewhere beautiful

how could you make something beautiful
in a place like this?
you’re still with me and you’re still beautiful

SOUTHERN SHORES

my dad’s old Sigma guitar
sounds transcendent outside in the dark
the notes hang in the evening air
levitate for anyone who’s there
the canal flows to the sound
cicadas sing their summer song so loud
look for me on Poteskeet
on the dock and right beside Jean Guite

Albermarle hits Currituck
Currituck flows right into the sea
we rolled down sand dunes, Okracoke
floating graveyards filled with shipwrecked boats
beachside cactus, Roanoke
bright gaillardia beside the road

Hemingway is always near
baby fox, blue heron, and deer

sometimes love notes sent down here
get stuck in island clouds and don’t appear
Highway 12 is just two lanes
ocean wind will blow it all away
2 Sly 4 U, Grandpa Bill
let’s take the gals for drinks, Kill Devil Hills
Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores
I’ve been there and I’ll be there some more

STRAWBERRY

in the meantime in between time
she’s sitting pretty in the courtyard
she’s all alone but I can see me with her
as her strawberry hair catches in the breeze

the sun just set the oil painted sky
that’s racing past her limestoned eyes
they spin me ’round and ‘round…

endless painting with a canvas changing
colors in the clouds as the night falls
I’m not convinced that she exists at
the same time as me but I don’t think I care

THE BIG BEAT DROPS

the high-rollers can’t take the heat
so I take the high-rollers’ seats
you with the funny cigarette
you with the old friends you just met

euphoric golden garden glow
do you think they can hear this sound below?

red velvet doormen lead the way
elevator men quickly fade to the background
when the lights cut and the big beat drops

euphoric garden golden glow
a pilgrimage for rock and roll
I see the rider and he sees me
my purple bag and my ecstasy
that horse looks crazy with hooves that pound
do you think they can hear him underground?

burning embers, dodgin’ sparks
whole city shakes to your guitar
when the lights cut and the crowd shrieks
and the big beat drops

I’ll follow you through the wall
burning embers, dodgin’ sparks
gleeful garageband hands
attack screaming guitars

the high-rollers can’t take the heat

THE DIRT & THE MOONLIGHT

do you remember trying to explain what it meant?
something about meeting who you’d wanted to invent?
remember loving a world where we both exist?
crossing off things from other people’s bucket lists?

the way you’d sing and the way you said yes
I remember bare feet and a summer dress

the middle of the night in the corner of your town
a distant freight train was the only sound
all I saw was you and the August sky
do you remember the dirt and moonlight?

remember splitting yourself in two?
expecting someone else to hold onto you?

dirt & the moonlight
dirt & the moonlight
dirt & the moonlight
dirt & the moonlight

remember the day your cards were revealed
on a picnic table and an open field?
remember keeping quiet in the Northeast night
and bathing your skin in LED light?
the forest floor we walked that night
you were crazy and my favorite kind

dirt & the moonlight
dirt & the moonlight
dirt & the moonlight
dirt & the moonlight

the day you said no and the day you said yes
everything in between, I guess
all I saw was you and the August sky
do you remember the dirt and the moonlight?

remember Sunday morning, the way you said
“be sure to milk it for all you can”?
you knew a thing or two about a life unfair
I kept waking up, ya kept not being there

the day you said no and the day you said yes
everything in between, I guess
all I saw was you and the August sky
do you remember the dirt and the moonlight?

dirt & the moonlight
dirt & the moonlight
dirt & the moonlight
dirt & the moonlight

THE MUSHROOM GIRL

I been seen, I have been with the mushroom girl
wedding gowns, sand between our toes
bonfires burn bitter words, mushroom girl
toss them letters in, watch ‘em glow
bonfires burn bitter words for the mushroom girl

the gardener thinks I heard the mushroom girl
thinks I pick her flowers in the night
there’s a mobile home and garden gnome for the mushroom girl
and the gardener is nowhere in sight
mobile home, garden gnome for the mushroom girl

a little boy’s draggin’ toys to the mushroom girl
under pale moonlight, he shaves his face
green with envy, the gardener frenzies the mushroom girl
and another little boy has won the race
green with envy, see him frenzy the mushroom girl

been so long, so much wrong for the mushroom girl
we haven’t been ourselves in quite a while
no one frowns half as well as the mushroom girl
but I found someone else who wears a smile

THE PROS AND CONS OF A CLEAN SLATE

the bad news about nobody needing you
is the good news about nobody needing you
wide visibility and lots of room
you’re free to dream, licensed, too

breathing room or too much space?
the pros and cons of a clean slate

i remember this one time I saw her shake
and another time when she didn’t think I was awake
then she was black haired pale and strange
and the clock read midnight for three days straight
I remember this one time I saw her shake
the pros and cons of a clean slate

I remember this one time I really fell
try to imagine a bottomless well
she was the mountain, the mountain peak
a mirror reflected back at me
crystalline prisms coloring the wall
I remember this one time I really did fall

breathing room or too much space?
the pros and cons of a clean slate
breathing room or too much space?

THE SCENIC ROUTE

I guess I’m taking the long way
taking the scenic route
some of these roads are in better shape
than others that I’ve used
sometimes it’s crystal-clear sight
sometimes I’m petrified
but I got a hunch that I’m doing it right

Lincoln Highway diners
2:15 AM
laying on our backs on the side of the road
with guitars in our hands
watching the sun rise slow
washed up in the glow
of a misty, olive green, American sky

I guess I’m taking the long way
taking the scenic route

colliding with summer air
crossing the Delaware
I find myself alone and I say hello
to a ghost walking with me there
I dunno what he wants to find
as he’s walking by my side
but here’s to the moments
when you’re getting it right

with or without aim you go
broken farm houses, walls of stone
sharp turns on rollercoaster roads
with or without aim you go.

if you see Jim, tell him for me
I waste the dawn constantly
but as for the dusk
it’s safe with me

THE STREET BEAT

we laid out in a field of green
and gazed upon the Mississippi
go on and put the sugar to bed
we’re going to Lamothe to rest our heads

the street beat beats on all night

you can haunt us if you’re inclined
but we bring ghosts in the Samsonite
we can shake it while we grieve
the dead rise up and try to breathe

the street beat beats on all night

follow the colored smoke plumes
from the calliope
follow the colored smoke plumes
the endless melody
follow the colored smoke plumes
from the calliope
follow the colored smoke plumes
the endless melody

the river flows on all night
the street beat beats all night
bayou girls treat poboys right

follow the colored smoke plumes
from the calliope
please grab me my coffee
bring some chicory

(WE HEARD THERE WAS GOING TO BE AN) EXORCISM

we heard that you’d be breaking some glass
we heard that you’d be breaking some glass
ocean waves and skies that change to colors between red and black
we heard that you’d be breaking some glass

we like to go home and break glass
we like to go home and break glass

there’s nothing wrong with wanting to leave
there’s nothing wrong with wanting to leave
the floors are dirty, there’s no windows in here!
nothing but the earth and sky are clear
there’s nothing wrong with wanting to leave

we like to go home and break glass
we like to go home and break glass

we like to go home and break glass
and we like to look to the sky
‘cause down from the roof the guitars will fly
cinderblocks falling from the sky

we like to go home and break glass
and we like to look to the sky
‘cause down from the roof the guitars will fly
cinderblocks falling from the sky

we like to go homeandbreak homeandbreak glass
we like to go homeandbreak glass

YOU DON’T HAVE A MAP

last winter I was cold
I always stayed home
I put love notes in the fireplace
watched ’em curl and warmed my bones
and when I went outside
there was no sun anymore
just rows and rows of flickerin’ lights
from a closed-down Woolworth’s store
“do you want to be like them?”
Cat asked me with a grin
“are you afraid of the fire?
the safest place you’ve ever been?”

when you know where you should go
how do you explain?
you don’t have a map
but you know the terrain
when you know where you should go
how do you explain?
you don’t have a map
but you know the terrain

they were on the interstate
and I pulled off for good
and slowly carved my own dirt road
with a piece of old driftwood
oh, the light inside of me
whether dim or on high beam
is still the brightest light that I
think I’ve ever seen

when you know where you should go
how do you get across?
you don’t have a map
but you know you’re not lost
when you know where you should go
how do you get across?
you don’t have a map
but you know you’re not lost

I want to listen to my soul
speak louder than I can
I want to draw my own road map
in the patterns on my hand

when you know where you should go
how do you get across?
you don’t have a map
but you know you’re not lost
when you know where you should go
how do you get across?
you don’t have a map
but you know you’re not lost
